“Freedom” — A Poem by Temilade Adejumo

She closed her eyes, willing herself to see it as much as she could feel it
They were there; the signs, the tell-tales, the suggestions,
They all knew what it meant,
The gentle touch of the moving wind, calm and soothing as a drop of water
The smell of earth that passes just after a long rainfall
The shrieking sound of a child’s laughter
The flapping wings of flying birds
The liberating sounds of rushing water
Even the slow hot tears escaping from the tight crevices of her lids knew it
But it stings that something as intimate as her imagination would deprive her of those.
