“Gradually” — A Poem by Chima Daniel

Gradually
we become old
our hearts get cold
weakness shines bold
then we do as we are told.

Gradually
we terminate haste
disseminate waste
incriminate taste
and eliminate chaste.

Gradually
we stop evolving,
distaste loving,
start dissolving
and hate moving.

Gradually
our arrows are guns,
we borrow for fun;
sorrow for the sun
while our tomorrow runs.

Gradually
our day becomes night,
our wrong becomes right
then we long to fight
as what we say is blight.

Gradually
we stop shining,
we start whining,
stop winning
and start declining.

Gradually
we are deafened to cries,
drawn to christened lies
while goodness dies
as we rave in ‘time flies’.

Gradually
everything becomes nothing,
anything becomes something,
stolen things the main things
as flings rest in our being.

Gradually
we live causally,
thrive hourly
and die finally.
