“The Birds We’ve Become” — A Poem by Chima Daniel

We’ve become eagles
hovering high in the sky
with needle eyes to pierce prey
and swift glide to pounce hard
on lives so fragile and soft.

We’ve become hawks
sprinting the azure blue
with our predatory presence
sprawling on straying chicks
remorsefully returning home.

We’ve become owls
gracing the cool night
with alluring creepy sounds
spying on the wingless ones
until they become our culprits.

We’ve become kites
soaring tirelessly in summer
waiting for no restraint
to attack an easygoing quail
scouting for daily seeds.

We’ve become birds of prey
with beaks to kill
and claws to steal;
but preys pray to adapt
till they become as we are.
