“Trace My Joy” — A Poem by Okoli Glory Onyinyechi

Trace my joy, dear.
The secret is close,
but my mind was far
to recognize.
It doesn’t come from the Earth.
The Earth’s materials
can never afford it.

I trace my joy;
I thought
It came from money.
I got the money,
But
I was soaked in sorrow.
Enjoyed my money
and never had peace.

My conclusion was that,
my joy lies
in
Pleasure.
I partied with friends
Dirtied my baby,
but
my joy lasted only for a moment.
Left
Me in a pit of sorrow.

Tired am I
in
Search of joy.
A friend told me that
when you’re in good
Position,
You will definitely find
Joy.

I fought for position,
Good position was
Mine.
Happy was I
and thanked God for it,
thinking that I’d found lasting
Joy.
A week later, I
Was tired about it,
Only to see that I was in a
Cage.
Couldn’t move freely
as I did before,
and
I became frustrated.

I went to bed,
and
was restless
Sleeping with my eyes open.
A voice came to me,
“My friend, do you need
Joy?”

“Oh yes!
I’m in search of Joy.”
“Joy was close to you
But
Your mind was far.
The world is so sweet
and the things in it.
None
Can give you lasting Joy.”

“Oh, dear, you love fruits
and went in search of them.
You
forgot the trees that bear fruits.
You love my creatures
But
Turn your back
on the Creator.

The world is sweet,
but
can’t satisfy you.
Until you find the one,
Who
Made them what they are.”

There and there.
I woke up.
” I have found my
Joy!”
I shouted.
I was moved to meditate,
God’s presence covered me,
with consolation and inner Joy,
and I
Was thrilled with Joy.

Henceforth,
Lasting Joy was mine.
I have no car
but
I have Joy.
Not rich
but
I’m fulfilled.
Even in my troubled
times,
I’m most happy.

My friends ask me.
“What’s the secret of your Joy?”
I laugh and say,
“Please,
dear, trace my Joy,
beyond the
Earth.”
