We Shall Be Free

Out on the streets with music and dancing
Ladies on colourful gowns feeling gay
Men gathered around, smiling and drinking
Children laughing, running and eager to play

The fears have been forgotten
Replaced by hope and peace
The bodies buried already rotting
We can now shake hands, hug and kiss

Music blaring on loud speakers
Food items exchanged gladly
Ayomide shakes Oga Emeka
Zainab hugs Gladys gladly

We look at the clock, it’s still 20:19
We survived the onslaught!
Now we only reminise on—
Covid-19 in a History class

We shall be free; we used to sing
We are free; we shall soon dance to.
