Behind a Thousand Smiles

She smiled to save my world
And yet I felt endangered
Because her beauty spat fire
I was burnt by its glory

She smiled to soothe my soul
An impossible therapy
Behind that smile were pages of the previous night
Paragraphs of forbidden words
A story she could never tell

She smiled to give me hope
Assurance that I was not alone
But I still felt cold
Some smiles don’t come from a warm heart

Behind one smile was a weeping heart
Behind another, was a crowded mind
Once upon a time, she smiled selflessly
When I looked well, I saw the shadow of Death

She smiled to light up my dreams
All for a price
A price costlier than my own life
That she alone could define my existence
