I stood there transfixed and unable to move.
“Ms. Jones, I suggest you hold yourself about what I’m about to tell you,” a cop said as he approached me.
“What is it?” I asked with confusion visibly written on my face.
“Your parents were involved in an auto-crash, we’re deeply sorry,” he said and lowed his head.
“Wh-what?!” I exclaimed.
“They’re at All Saints Hospital at the moment,” he said and left.
I felt like I had been neglected by Fate. I didn’t get the job, my parents are in the hospital. How much worse could it get? Where am I gonna get the money?!
“Why!” I screamed to the heavens and fell on my knees. Getting up, I hailed a taxi and boarded it to the hospital.

I ran inside the hospital, “Good morning nurse,” I greeted the nurse at the reception desk. “I’m looking for The Jones. Can I see ‘em?” I asked the nurse wiping my tears.
“You’re Anita Jones?” she asked and I nodded my head.
The doctor wants to see you,” she said and gave me the direction to the doctors office.
I walked straight to his office and met him doing some paperwork.
“Good day doctor,” I greeted.
“Have a seat,” he replied with a smile and I sat down.
“Who are you?” he asked.
“I’m Anita Jones,” I said.
“Where are my parents?” I asked interrupting him.
“Calm down ma’am, your parents are okay— for now.” He brought his chair forward and continued. “…your father has a hole in his heart. The accident made an impact in the heart and it’s quite unfortunate but we have to perform a surgery on him within three days,” he said and looked at me.
“So?” I asked.
“So, we need a deposit of thirty thousand dollars to perform the surgery,” he concluded.
“Isn’t the money a bit high?” I asked.
“The operation will be performed by our best surgeon, you have three days. Make haste while the sun shines,” he paused and stood up, “Excuse me,” he added and left the office.
I sat down as tears streamed down my cheeks. Maybe I should go back to Mr. Bryan, I thought and left.

“Look who’s here!” Bryan said sarcastically.
“I’m not here for jokes,” I snapped.
“So, what brings the tough girl to my domain?” he asked.
“Can’t I have a seat?” I asked.
“Sure, you can’t have a seat,” he said and smirked.
I sat down. “Look,” I began, “I need your help.”
“Oh. My help. With what?” he asked.
“I need you to give me a loan of thirty thousand. I’ll pay you back, I promise.”
“How are you gonna pay?” he asked.
“I’m gonna work for you until I cover up,” I answered.
“Nope! I don’t work that way,” he said and let out a mischievous smile.
“What? No way? I’m not gonna have sex with you, I’m not a slut!” I snapped.
“Well then, what do you need the money for?”
“That’s none of your business, okay?” I snapped.
“Okay, here’s how it gets done, I’ll give you the money if you agree to be my personal assistant, agreed?”
“Agreed. But I’m gonna live in my house,” I suggested.
“No. You’re gonna live with me in my house,” he said.
My parents lives are in danger. If living with a jerk will save them then so be it. “When do I commence?” I asked.
“You’re to start today and now. So, go to my secretary ask for my clothes, take them to the laundry. Afterwards go to receptionist and ask for my car key. Go to the car wash and get it washed. Bring it back before thirty minutes. Then your thirty thousand will be ready. Goodluck.”
